Here comes 3G service in INDIA

Posted by: dsocialweb on: December 17, 2008

Dear Valued Mobile Users now its the cheer up time as After a long wait, the Indian government has decided that it will auction 3G spectrum, and will allow foreign players to participate in the bidding. The spectrum is going to be released in the 2100 MHz band, which would make it compatible with rest of the world, barring a few countries such as the U.S.

If you’ve got to express yourself, karlo 3G mutthi mein. For GeNext — the third generation consumer — here’s the power of wireless applications and internet at broadband speed. India will soon join the elite club of countries that have 3G mobile services with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) setting up India’s first 3G network in Delhi and Mumbai. The network will have a capacity of 4m lines and will be operational next year. First, the basics. The total investment in the project will be to the tune of Rs 4,000 crore. The company has already started discussions with equipment suppliers.

The Experience Telephony? Imagine a world of experience phones with high-resolution colour displays, polyphonic sound — and not to mention built-in video cameras. Here’s what the magic of 3G is all about: Stream or download audio and video content or applications over-the-air, including sports highlights, music videos and multi-user games.

Locate, navigate, and enhance your security with GPS-assisted position services. Send video and picture messages or participate in a live video conference — you don’t need to keep 9-to-5 hours, you can be at work or you can be at play. Wherever 3G goes, your office follows, to turn the old mobile paradigm on its head.

For the geeks, here’s what the tech-tonic shift is all about: 3G services allow high-speed mobile broadband access at a speed of more than 386 kbps. This will be a techie’s dream come true. 3G technology enables you to work out of your mobile instrument.
It becomes your work station with high-speed bandwidth enabling video downloads and other critical functions. Mobile Phone subscribers in India will soon have access to wireless applications and the internet at broadband speeds with the latest 3G CDMA devices.

3G services have already become popular in Japan, UK, Hong Kong, Australia, Sweden and Denmark. NTT DoCoMo has a subscriber base of more than 3.5m in Japan. Swedish mobile service provider ‘3’ has a subscriber base of 350,000 in Sweden and Denmark, adding around 150,000 customers since mid-August. In UK, Hutchison is the 3G service provider.

3G services enable high data applications. Therefore, the average revenue per user from 3G subscribers is more than that of ordinary mobile subscribers. Internationally, revenues from 3G services is about 60% higher than that of ordinary mobile services.

RSP Sinha, MTNL’s chairman and managing director, said, “The future is of broadband and wireless will be its lifeline. Therefore, MTNL can not miss this opportunity. However, broadband on fixed line will continue to be important.”

The company is talking to vendors about tender specifications. Sources said that the company is in touch with the department of telecommunications (DoT) on spectrum-related issues.

According to Mr Sinha the company plans to launch services by the end of next year. “We want to set a precedent by offering 3G services first and letting other operators follow us,” said Mr Sinha.

In the past one year, MTNL has managed to turn around from a monolith government company with slow decision-making to a modern company with fast decision-making. Its first big success came last month when it relaunched its GSM mobile services in two metros.

The services were an instant hit and added 76,000 subscribers — more than five times that of its nearest competitor.

Another success of MTNL is broadband, which will be launched in January. The broadband services project is in the final stages of execution. Its CDMA project for 800,000 lines is in the final stages of commissioning.

The company has also offered VRS to its 44,000 group C and D employees. The company achieved a historic revenue growth of 10% at Rs 6,400 crore in the last financial.

  1. The Govt has admirably cleared the way for deployment of broadband wireless services in the 2.5 GHz band, but they haven’t specified WiMAX which means that any technology can be deployed in either FDD or TDD bands. Basically that is a technology neutral position which actually means that WiMAX is in the mix but so is LTE, UMB and other technologies.
  2. Considering that there are hardly any WiMAX networks with economies of scale, a mobile WiMAX standard that is still under development, no devices etc etc, I find it rather curious that you think 3G will have to compete with WiMAX. It is the other way around…

Hence I hope you enjoyed the new post by Dsocialweb. Have a nice day :)
